A local charter school was evacuated yesterday morning after a 9-year-old brought a fake grenade to class.

“A little boy brought a toy grenade to school — a fake grenade. It was a toy,” Angela Corosanite, CEO of Philadelphia Performing Arts Charter School, said.

As a precautionary, the toy was taken outside and police were called around 8 a.m. The students were quickly evacuated to Fels South Philadelphia Community Center, 2407 S. Broad St., where they remained until the Bomb Squad cleared the building about 15 minutes later.

“Classes are in place as usual,” she added.

Disciplinary action for the boy will be determined by the principal, Corosanite said.
