Two onlookers tackled a Passyunk Square man who was trying to escape after allegedly mugging a woman Sunday evening.

Michael Beasley, 40, of the 1300 block of East Passyunk Avenue, allegedly grabbed a 46-year-old’s purse as she was walking along the 1600 block of South Ninth Street, but the woman did not let go, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detectives said.

The two tugged the purse back and forth, but when they fell down, she lost her grip on the purse that contained two cell phones and $500, Tolliver said. Beasley is believed to have stood up and ran north toward Tasker Street with the woman screaming for help behind him as she chased him. On the 900 block of Fernon Street, two passers-by tackled Beasley and held him until police arrived.

Beasley was arrested and charged with robbery, theft and simple assault. The purse was recovered. The woman suffered cuts to her knees, but did not require medical treatment.
