Upper Darby detectives detained one man, but his alleged drunken neighbor ended up wounded and in police custody.

Upper Darby Police Department Detectives Brad Ross and Bill Sminkey arrested 32-year-old William Chestnut for two protection from abuse orders at his home on the 300 block of Winton Street at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 30 for allegedly threatening his girlfriend — formerly of Upper Darby — on Facebook, Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said.

During the arrest, neighbor James Moore, 33, is believed to have confronted the detectives, Chitwood said.

“Moore apparently was intoxicated and demanded to know who the detectives were and why they were taking his friend,” Chitwood said.

Detectives identified themselves, but Moore allegedly stood in front of their unmarked police auto until Ross, who was behind the wheel, turned on the vehicle’s lights and sirens, Chitwood said.

The police were traveling west on Jackson Street when a pickup truck — suspposedly containing Moore and his pit bull mix — allegedly rear-ended their automobile at Seventh Street and continued to do so at each red light and stop sign, Chitwood said.

However, at Broad Street and Oregon Avenue, Moore allegedly sideswiped the cruiser spinning it and pinning the driver’s side door, Chitwood said. The officers crawled out of the passenger’s side and retrieved Chestnut from the back. To prevent Moore from striking the vehicle again, officers fired about 10 shots, with one striking Moore’s left hand.

“Unfortunately some of the shots that were fired at Moore hit the dog and killed the dog,” Chitwood said.

Moore is believed to have fled the scene. Upon Philadelphia police responding, he returned and is believed to have shouted at the Upper Darby officers, Chitwood said. Moore was arrested near Broad and Shunk streets and was treated for his wound at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

He was charged with two counts of resisting arrest; one count of driving under the influence, aggravated assault by a vehicle while driving under the influence, fleeing or attempting to elude an officer; and related offenses, according to court records.

Chestnut was unharmed while the detectives were treated at Delaware County Memorial Hospital for neck and back injuries and were expected to return to work yesterday.
