The Philadelphia Fire Department offered Christmas tree safety tips:

• Make an 1-inch fresh cut at its base.

• Place it firmly in the stand with plenty of room for water.

• Check its water level daily and add more, if needed.

• Check electrical cords for wear and outlets for overloading.

• Never leave a lighted tree unattended.

• Don’t block exits or stairs with the tree.

• Keep it away from heat sources.

• It should be free of decorations before disposal.

The City will dispose of trees on regular trash collection days. To recycle, residents may drop off their trees 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays at the Streets Department’s Sanitation Convenience Centers, Domino Lane and Umbria Street, State Road and Ashburner Street or 63rd Street and West Passyunk Avenue.

Area groups including East Passyunk Crossing Civic Association and Town Watch, Lower Moyamensing Civic Association, Newbold Neighbors Association and Passyunk Square Civic Association will hold a Tree-cycling event 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 7 at Columbus Square Park, 13th and Wharton streets. For a $5 donation, the groups will recycle the evergreens by turning them into wood chips.
