Police discovered two young children among rodents and filth in a Whitman apartment after their mother was arrested in Lower Moyamensing.

3rd District police officers pulled over a blue Ford Escape on the 2200 block of South 12th Street at 1:45 a.m. Friday and determined the passenger, Dawn M. Canterbury, 31, of the 100 block of Snyder Avenue, was wanted for fraud in Lansdale, according to the Police Public Affairs Unit. Upon her arrest, officers recovered narcotics.

She asked to give the vehicle’s driver her keys, so he could check on her sons, who police learned were left unattended, according to the Police Public Affairs Unit. Officers discovered her second-floor apartment’s door wide open and the place in terrible condition with rats roaming around. Canterbury’s 3-year-old son was in the living room while her 1-year-old son was in a crib in the bedroom. Both were unharmed, but are now in the custody of the Department of Human Services.

Canterbury was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of children and recklessly endangering another person, as well as possession charges.
