Making the cut

With D. Olivieri Jewelers’ friendly, relaxing atmosphere and affordable prices at 2523 S. Broad St., the family-owned business since 1957 topped the rest as best jewelry store.

Dan Olivieri and his mother Lena Olivieri, third-generation owners of one of the oldest jewelry stores in South Philly, boast about being one of the few jewelers in the area that still manufacture on the premises. The business also promotes a friendly atmosphere for customers.

“People that aren’t friends become friends quickly,” Dan said.

The Gemological Institute of America graduate and certified gemologist has a loyal following of customers — reaching all the way to California — who have moved out of the area and still find a way to do business over the telephone.

“We really do whatever it takes to make the customer happy,” he said.

The 55-year-old jewelry operation has excelled above and beyond with a large selection of jewelry, including work from top designers in Italy.

“We have everything from sterling silver, which is low to moderate in price, all the way up to very expensive diamond rings,” he said.

By hiring young adults and students from Philly to work for him, Dan believes he contributes to the community by teaching young people how to be in business. He also combines his efforts at the store and with his work at the South Philadelphia Business Association to establish monetary scholarships for students seeking higher education.

With strong commitment to the trade and outstanding customer service, Dan said this has been one of the “best business years ever.”

Telstar Jewelers made the cut for second place and Armando Rey Jewelry shined close behind.
