A West Passyunk man pulled a gun on two cops from inside a Point Breeze schoolyard Tuesday.

The pair of 1st District uniformed police officers responded to Hemberger and McKean streets for a reported person with a gun at 5 p.m., Lt. Ray Evers of the Police Public Affair Unit said. There, they saw a man matching the gunman’s description whom they knew as Tyrell Brown, 20, of the 2300 block of Mifflin Street.

As the officers exited their marked police vehicle, Brown allegedly ran north on the 1900 block of South Hemberger while holding his right hip, Evers said. Brown is believed to have led the officers on a foot pursuit to Delaplaine McDaniel School, 1801 S. 22nd St., where he climbed a 6 foot fence. As he landed on the other side, a .32 caliber revolver allegedly dropped from his clothing. He is believed to have retrieved the firearm and pointed it at the officers, one of whom then fired seven shots, striking Brown three times in his left leg and buttocks.

Brown is believed to have attempted to flee on foot, but the officers tackled him inside the schoolyard and took him into custody, Evers said. Brown was transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in critical condition.

Police recovered his firearm, which had a strike mark on one of the primers, making it seem Brown may have attempted to fire it, Evers said. The officers, who sustained minor scrapes from taking down Brown, also recovered cocaine in his pocket.

Brown’s charges were not available at press time.
