Melodious mission

Growing up within a home where she often heard her father, brother and conductor Carlo Moresco giving piano, violin and voice instruction, Giovanna Cavaliere felt privileged to receive such peerless exposure to music. Needing no encouragement to remain enamored, the 71-year-old has made nurturing and honoring talent her mission and will soon present the 22nd Annual Memorial Concert for the Alfonso Cavaliere Memorial Scholarship Fund, which she founded to cement her sibling’s legacy of likewise honing formidable performers.

“It makes for a happy time in everyone’s life,” the resident of the 2300 block of South 12th Street said of the celebration, with this year’s set for Oct. 19 at Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St. “The day commends a wonderfully gifted individual and brings music to the person who might not be able to afford costly outings in the city.”

Cavaliere will congratulate fellow Lower Moyamensing inhabitant William Davenport next Sunday, offering kudos with roots in her brother’s devotion to guiding budding music enthusiasts and her six-year tenure as immortal tenor Luciano Pavarotti’s social secretary. Teaming with Bel Canto Lyric Opera of Philadelphia, she is excited to pair fine artistry with audience revelry and is constantly thinking of how to improve the already impressive concert assortment of Broadway selections and operatic gems.

“I encounter so many great, young figures that I wish I could have more winners,” Cavaliere said. “As soon as a show is over, I think about how next year’s can be even better.”

The benefactor has ventured to numerous venues to see the evolution of scholarship recipients, many of whom have become Metropolitan Opera hires. Adoring music’s possibilities, the tireless devotee of lyrical inspiration wants notes to occupy notable places in everyone’s heart, especially since her own organ has experienced such fulfillment.

“God has given me a great life,” Cavaliere, also active with Epiphany of Our Lord Church, 1121 Jackson St., and the alumni association for South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St., said. “We enter and leave this world with nothing but our name, and we should never tarnish it.”
