Not to be eclipsed

Albert “Moonie Spot” Custis readily admits that poor decisions often plagued his existence years ago, stating “I used to be a problem in the neighborhood.” Preferring to foster a positive perspective on life these days, the 43-year-old has become a highly revered community member, with two admirable titles resounding among residents of Grays Ferry and Point Breeze.

“I want to push others to believe in themselves,” the local resident said from 20th and Tasker streets, the site of the Ralph Brooks Basketball League that he started in July. “It’s easy to take the wrong road, but there’s so much more to learn about yourself if you don’t.”

Along with the 35-and-over initiative for local hoopsters, the Point Breeze native has won regard as the community outreach person for 186th District state Rep. Jordan Harris. That duty and a connection with 2nd District Councilman Kenyatta Johnson have bred deeper respect for neighborhood concerns, which Custis has helped to address through a pair of eponymous community days.

“I have the gumption to bring about change, and I love sharing that thinking with the people around here because we can save the majority of those who need help, even if we’re doing that one block at a time,” he said, adding that any endeavor that he pursues comes “right from my heart.”

Having overcome a distressing period where, according to his nomination, he and the right side of the law were estranged, Custis has grown as a motivator, with the June 2012 receipt of his high school diploma as a reminder that nothing trumps self-belief.

“I’m all about getting the most out of every day,” the Grays Ferry resident said, noting that the evolution of the basketball league, perhaps through an indoor location, will “undoubtedly save a number of lives.”

As for his placement among this year’s crop of honorees, Custis credited others for inspiring him and looks forward to finding more moments to block out negativity and to let positivity shine.

“I’ve had a good run of late,” he said. “I think it’s time for other people to have their share of good times, too.” -J.M.
