Sports briefs: 7-01-04

SPORTS DEADLINE
The deadline for sports notices is Monday at noon. Due to space restrictions, all briefs must be limited to 30-50 words. Submissions should be typed or neatly printed, with both a contact number for verification and one for publication. Names should be properly spelled and include both first and last names. Phoned-in items will be rejected. The same brief will not be run for more than three consecutive weeks.

GOLF PROGRAM
Openings are still available for the Philadelphia Department of Recreation golf program for boys and girls ages 11-15. Sessions will be held at the Longknockers driving range, 33rd and Oxford streets in East Fairmount Park; Fisher’s Glen driving range, 4717 Fisher’s Lane in Juniata Park; and Cobbs Creek Golf Club, 72nd Street and Landsdowne Avenue. The highly successful program features professional instruction from members of the Philadelphia Section of the Professional Golfers Association along with days of golf at one of the Meadowbrook public golf courses at the end of each week. The Recreation Department will provide the necessary equipment to teach each camper. The two sessions available at Longknockers are the weeks of July 6-9 and July 12-16. GUERIN BASKETBALL CAMP
The Philadelphia Department of Recreation will host a coed instructional basketball camp for ages 10-14 run by Girard Academic Music Program basketball coach Art Kratchman. The camp will be held at Guerin Recreation Center, 16th and Jackson streets, from July 26-30, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Call 215-685-1894.

JIMMY WILSON BASKETBALL
The Jimmy Wilson Youth Association is looking for teams and players for its summer league at the tot lot, 20th and Tasker streets, and DeSilvestro Playground, 15th and Morris streets. The camp is ongoing at Chew Recreation Center, 19th Street and Washington Avenue, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m.-noon and 2-4 p.m. Call Jimmy Wilson, 215-577-6919.

NATIONAL TENNIS LEAGUE
The National Junior Tennis League, a seven-week grassroots program for children, will return to South Philly from Monday-Aug. 12, hosted by Barry Playground, 18th and Bigler streets; Weccacoe Playground, Fourth and Catharine streets; and Wharton Square tennis courts, 23rd and Wharton streets. Beginners play from 9 a.m.-noon; intermediate-level players will take the court from 1-4 p.m. Each child will receive a T-shirt and any equipment needed (including rackets). ORLANDO UPDATE
She made it really far, but sadly not all the way — South Philadelphia native Tia Orlando, originally of the 2800 block of South 10th Street, will not compete in the 2004 Summer Olympic in Athens, Greece, after withdrawing from last weekend’s U.S. Olympic Trials in California. Orlando finished 14th in the all-around competition with a score of 54.025 and was not invited to the selection camp. The 16-year-old was 10th after Friday night’s opening round (36.650).

RIVERSHARKS CLINIC
Citizens Bank Youth Clinic is teaming up with the players and coaches of the Camden Riversharks to offer ages 6-12 the opportunity to enhance their skills on the baseball diamond. Free clinics will be held from 1-3 p.m. on July 10 and Aug. 10 at Campbell’s Field on the Camden waterfront and are limited to the first 100 children who register. Parents are invited to watch. Immediately following each clinic, players and coaches will be available for a question and answer period and an autograph session. SEYAA SOCCER
Registration is underway for the fall outdoor soccer program, which will begin play Sept. 11. All prior participants will receive a registration form by mail. Divisions are 4-6, 7-9, 9-11, 12-14 and 15-17. Register at the SEYAA sports complex, Seventh and Bigler streets, in the office above the garage Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6-8. SIGMA SHARKS

SUMMER HOOPS TOUR
The ninth annual 76ers Summer Hoops Tour will make a stop at the Kingsessing Recreation Center, 50th Street and Chester Avenue, on July 12 at 10 a.m. World B. Free, the 76ers’ basketball ambassador, will lead youths in a series of drills and games emphasizing the fundamentals of shooting, passing, dribbling, defense and rebounding, as well as the importance of teamwork. The event is free and open to children of all ages. Each clinic lasts approximately 90 minutes and no pre-registration is necessary. All participants will receive promotional items and have a chance to challenge Free and the Sixers staff with their new skills. Call 215-339-7676.
