Second arrest in teen’s slaying

Police are looking for the teen they say is responsible for the Nov. 7 shooting death of 16-year-old Daniel Starling, a South Philly High sophomore.

Chief Inspector Joseph Fox held a press conference last Thursday to announce an arrest warrant had been issued for the triggerman: Tyrik Hawkins.

Police have two addresses for the 21-year-old: the 1900 block of Pierce Street and the 2300 block of Fernon Street, Homicide Fugitive Squad Detective Ed Rocks said.

Hawkins walked up to Starling while he was standing with friends at 1925 Snyder Ave. and ambushed him with gunfire, Fox said. Afterwards, he jumped in a waiting getaway car – a silver Pontiac occupied by two other males – parked on the 1900 block of Garnet Street, police said. The car sped away and crashed at the intersection of 20th and Fernon streets. The three exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The weapon, a .45-caliber pistol, was discarded after the trio exited the car, the chief said.

Dec. 17 at 7 a.m., detectives arrested the driver of the Pontiac, Tauhed Sadat, 21, from the 2100 block of Mifflin Street. Sadat has been charged with murder and related offenses, the chief said.

More arrests in Starling’s homicide are possible, Fox added.

A motive for the teen’s slaying remains unknown.

The teen was walking on the 700 block of Moore Street at about 7:50 p.m. when the attack occurred, Detective Jim Dunlap of South Detective Division said.

The teen told detectives she did not know if the assailant was a woman or a man because the person was wearing a black Hoodie. The person exited a small black car with tinted windows that, after the attack, sped off up Ninth Street, police said.

A medic took the teen to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in stable condition.

Felony charge reinstated for bouncer

A felony charge was reinstated Tuesday against the Fat Tuesday bouncer charged with assaulting and throwing a patron down a flight of stairs in May.

Common Pleas Court Judge Chris Wogan reinstated an aggravated assault charge against Lyle Henry, 32, of Willingboro, N.J., District Attorney spokesperson Cathie Abookire said.

David LaSalle, 22, of Warminster was critically injured in the Memorial Day incident at the popular South Street bar.

At Henry’s July 28 preliminary hearing, another judge dismissed the felony charge, but kept the two misdemeanors: simple assault and recklessly endangering another person. On the heels of that ruling, the District Attorney’s Office re-arrested Henry on the felony charge, Abookire said.

Nov. 22, both sides submitted briefs to Wogan who ruled this week for the reinstatement. Henry will be tried sometime next year on all three charges, Abookire said.
