Carlene Hightower, a La Salle University senior, was named to the Atlantic 10 preseason First Team and All-Defensive Team. The resident of 33rd and Reed streets tallied 525 points and 213 rebounds as a junior to become just the fourth athlete in La Salle’s 35-year history to reach those marks in a season.
Through the Explorers first four games, Hightower is leading the 2-2 squad in both points (23.2) and rebounds (10.3).
Prep Charter grad Rodney Green is playing a key role on the Explorers men’s basketball team with a team-high 15 points per game, while his 1.5 steals per contest ranks second-best. The sophomore guard was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team during the 2006-07 season.
Tywain McKee, of 13th and Bainbridge streets, was one of 25 players named to the collegeinsider.com Mid-Major All-America Team in October. McKee is the only member of the Mid-East Athletic Conference to receive the honor. During the ’06-’07 season, McKee became the 20th Coppin State player to surpass 1,000 career points. He currently leads the Eagles offense with 17 points per game.
With 10 points from Gloria Brown, an ’06 Neumann-Goretti grad, the North Carolina State women’s basketball team defeated Brown University in the Nov. 18 consolation game of the TD Banknorth Classic. The rookie has seen action in all four games this season and is averaging 4.5 points and 2.5 rebounds a contest.
