KOPLOVE UPDATE

South Philly native Mike Koplove has come to terms with the Los Angeles Dodgers on a split contract with a spring training invitation for the 2008 season. He spent this past year with the Florida Marlins and Cleveland Indians.


RIZZO RINK SKATING LESSONS

Rizzo Rink, Front Street and Washington Avenue, will have ice skating lessons Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and final ice hockey registration for ages 5 to 15. Registrations take place at the rink 6 to 8 p.m. weeknights and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Call 215-685-1593.


SEYAA WINTER SPORTS

SEYAA is holding registrations for winter basketball and indoor soccer, which will both begin the week of Jan. 6. The age divisions are: 4 to 6 for biddy basketball; 7 to 8; 9 to 10; and 11 to 13. The indoor soccer program is for ages 4 to 7. Games will be played at Taggart School, Fifth and Porter streets. The fee for basketball is $40 and soccer is $20. SOUTH PHILLY SOCCER CLUB

The Celtic Soul and the Strikers, both of the South Philadelphia Soccer Club, won Philadelphia Department of Recreation (PDR) City soccer championship trophies with respective victories over Port Richmond-based COHOX SC.

The under-15 Celtic Soul won its third PDR title in three years, with the others coming in the 2005 and ’06 seasons.

The under-14 Strikers won their third consecutive major fall league title with PDR honors in ’05 and ’07 and the United Junior Soccer League in ’06.


YOUTH HOCKEY FOUNDATION

The Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation is adding after-school programming to three city rinks. The new participating rinks are the Scanlon Rink in Kensington, The Laura Sims Skatehouse in West Philadelphia and the Simons Youth Access and Teen Center in West Oak Lane.

The program includes academic support and life-skills lessons. Space is limited and students are registered on a first-come/first-served basis. Call the ESYHF office, 215-952-5271, or visit wee.esyhf.org.
