When a school police officer from John H. Taggart School, 400 W. Porter St., entered his office at 7:05 a.m., he spotted and picked up an item wrapped in a paper towel on his desk, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Upon seeing what appeared to be a pineapple-style hand grenade, he placed it back down and alerted the administration to enforce an evacuation.

Students filed out of the building and were taken four blocks away to George Sharswood School, 2300 S. Second St., while the Bomb Disposal Unit responded to Taggart, Tolliver said. The grenade was determined to be inactive and given to the Crime Scene Unit to dust for fingerprints.

A K-9 unit inspected the school for more potential grenades, Tolliver said. None were found and the students returned to classes.
