Early-morning intruder

An elderly woman awoke to a man scouring through her possessions early Friday morning and, after flicking on the light to see what was going on, took a hit to her right eye.

The 70-year-old sat up in the rear bedroom of a home on the 1500 block of South 15th Street at 3:45 a.m. and saw the intruder, so she turned on the light, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Another man then entered the room and punched her before the two fled the home in an unknown direction.

A family member transported the woman to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where she was treated for swelling and a laceration near her eye, Tolliver said.

There was no forced entry into the home and police were not aware if anything was taken.
