Police asked a Germantown man to leave a West Passyunk home, but after refusing, he accumulated more charges by allegedly assaulting his arresting officers early Saturday.

Melvin Groomes, 35, is believed to have punched and kicked in addition to attempting to choke and disarm the officers who responded to the 1900 block of Dudley Street where Groomes was allegedly pursuing his 22-year-old ex-girlfriend, who does not live there at 1:25 a.m., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said.

Groomes allegedly kicked in a second floor, rear bedroom door where a 37-year-old woman — the ex-girlfriend’s friend and resident of the home — was located, Tolliver said.

When Groomes declined the officers’ orders to leave, they tried to handcuff him, but he forcefully resisted and allegedly assaulted both officers, slamming one of them into the ground and punching him in the head, Tolliver said. The other officer tried to subdue Groomes by striking him with his asp, but the suspect is believed to have continued to resist by attempting to disarm an officer. Backup arrived and handcuffed Groomes, who allegedly said, “I’m going to f*** you up” to the officers.

The responding officers suffered minor injuries, Tolliver said.

Groomes was charged with simple assault, harassment and criminal mischief for the initial incident as well as two counts of aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and resisting arrest and one count of terroristic threats, disarming a law enforcement officer for allegedly assaulting the officers.
