Following shots fired on a Grays Ferry street, a man fled the scene leaving his 3-year-old boy in the backseat.

Shamir Kase, 24, of the 1100 block of South 26th Street, was driving a 2010 black Chevrolet Impala with a 22-year-old in the passenger’s seat and his 3-year-old son in the backseat, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said.

When Kase, who was traveling west on the 3100 block of Tasker Street, stopped behind a bus, two unknown men walked up to the car and started shooting, Tolliver said. Kase sped off north — the wrong direction — on the 1500 block of South Patton Street and on to the sidewalk where he struck a few parked cars — 1995 Jeep Cherokee, ’96 Pontiac Bonneville and 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix — that were unoccupied. The Jeep also suffered a broken front windshield and back window due to gunfire.

Kase and the 22-year-old fled the auto leaving the toddler in the backseat and, at 33rd and Reed streets, flagged down a driver to drive them to Kase’s home, Tolliver said.

Police discovered the child in the backseat unharmed, and the toddler’s mother picked him up, Tolliver said. Kase returned to the scene at an unknown time at which time he was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child and recklessly endangering another person.

Police recovered a loaded firearm in a vacant lot on the 1500 block of South Patton, Tolliver said.
