A woman was found dead in the Point Breeze/Newbold area about a week after she was reported missing from her Whitman home.

Police located Iris Tyson, 23, of the 2300 block of South American Street, at 7:08 a.m. Sunday on the 1100 block of South Sydenham Street, Officer Jill Russell of the Police Public Affairs Unit said. She is believed to have been killed about 24 hours earlier due to blunt force trauma to her head, but police did not have any suspects or a motive as of press time.

Tyson’s mother reported her missing to 3rd District police at 6:18 p.m. May 8 after about six hours had passed since she had left their home to buy her a Mother’s Day gift, according to police. When Tyson did not return, her mother checked with friends and family members with no luck. The family distributed missing person fliers and area residents helped to organize a search party in the neighborhood Friday afternoon.

Police do not know of her whereabouts between May 8 and 15, Russell said.
