Exchange of words

A group member, who was taunting a pair traveling through Hawthorne, fired shots early Sunday.

A group of nine, who had been drinking alcohol prior to walking to a house party at 12th and Kater streets, encountered another group calling to them at 13th and Catharine streets on the way to the party, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The crews exchanged words that included profanity and taunting when a member of a group hanging out in Hawthorne pulled a medium-sized semi-automatic handgun from his waistband and pointed it at a 19-year-old woman and man and said, “yeah, what’s up now?” He then shot at them as they ran north on 13th.

No one was struck and the detectives recovered ballistics evidence at the scene, Tolliver said.

The gunman was described as black with a medium complexion, in his late teens to mid-20s, 5-foot-10, thin and wearing a dark-colored hoody and dark-colored sweat pants and sneakers.
