Police have linked two early-morning muggings in which a man obstructed females’ airways before stealing their pocketbooks.

A 34-year-old woman was headed west on the 600 block of Catharine Street at 7:25 a.m. Sunday when she saw a man going around the block on a bicycle with a white T-shirt covering his face, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detectives said. He then approached the victim from behind, put his arm around her neck, pushed the female to the ground and snatched her silver-colored purse, which contained a white iPhone, credit card, ID, keys and $300.

The woman had neck pain, but did not seek medical treatment, Tolliver said.

At 6:15 Monday, the same man is believed to have mugged a 33-year-old woman on the 400 block of Christian Street. He came up from behind his target and choked the victim, who passed out and awoke to find her purse that contained her ID and credit cards missing. It was unknown if she sought medical treatment.

Surveillance video captured the perpetrator in the former incident, according to the Police Public Affairs Unit.

The offender was described as black with a medium complexion, in his early 20s, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-9; having a medium build; wearing a white T-shirt; and riding a dark-colored mountain bike, according to Public Affairs.
