Now appearing as the emcee for The Roots on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” Trotter, 39, has been making rhymes for three decades. His family moved from Mount Airy to Point Breeze, whose hip-hop culture influenced the future Grammy-Award-winner as both of his parents were killed — his father in his early days and his mother during college. While attending the High School for Creative and Performing Arts, the resident of 23rd and Watkins streets met Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson and formed The Square Roots.

After reshaping the name and adding more members, the group went from playing talent shows to booking clubs in Philly and New York. Since then, it has won four Grammys and has served as the house band for Fallon for four years and will continue with him on his journey as he takes over “The Tonight Show” next season.
