In an apparent suicide, police located an 83-year-old man deceased at a Marconi green space Monday afternoon.
Police responded to the east side of Marconi Plaza, 2700 S. Broad St., at 12:16 p.m. where officers found the man, whose name was withheld pending family notification, slumped beside a large tree near the Broad Street side of the park with one self-inflicted gunshot to the chest, 3rd District Lt. John Hewitt said. Medics pronounced him dead eight minutes later.
Authorities wrapped up their investigation at about 1:50 p.m., but it still was unclear when the shot occurred or what his mental state was at the time of the incident, Hewitt said. The revolver used in the shooting was recovered at the scene.
