The admonition by Jesus that his flock build temples (responding to “Knocking on Cardella’s door,” Sept. 29) should have been attributed to one of the Mormon guides. I would never presume to be a biblical expert. Regarding whether religious institutions should pay taxes, I think it’s a debatable point that could be tested in the courts. Churches on both the left and the right have strayed into political issues that are worthy of debate as to whether they are covered under the First Amendment. The recent closings of parish churches are irrelevant to the argument, in my opinion. Some of the problem has to do with the financial strain placed on them by lawsuits incurred as a result of what many of us think was a blatant attempt at covering up crimes of sexual abuse.
