As Austin Freni walked along the 400 block of Oregon Avenue at 11:09 p.m. Sunday, the 19-year-old, accompanied by his mother and girlfriend, came in contact with a group of 12 males, who, having approached from Third Street and Oregon Avenue, began to insult him when they saw his Army attire, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. One member struck him, with the others soon joining in and delivering blows to his face and body. The New Jersey native received transport by fire rescue to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he was treated for severe facial injuries that will require the placement of plates in his jaw.
