When Matty and Cristina Beningno, owners of Potito’s Bakery, 1614 W. Ritner St., received the news they won bragging rights for the best cupcake, they couldn’t wait to share the news with their two sons, Matthew and Gioecchino.

“It’s such an honor to be recognized for best cupcakes,” Matthew said. “Our children were especially excited since it’s one of their favorite items in the bakery.”

This is much more than a family thing, as Potito’s sells hundreds of them on a weekly basis. The vanilla cupcakes with buttercream and jimmies are the top seller, while the red velvet cupcake with cream cheese icing is also popular.

Like many of the other South Philly bakeries, this one has a rich tradition that dates back to 1985 when the late Carmen Potito opened the store with his wife, Maria. Cristina took over the business with her husband following her father’s passing.

Be warned, leaving Potito’s with just one box of cupcakes may be easier said than done, as this corner spot also made a strong showing in the canolli and doughnut categories.
