The Dolphin Tavern has resurfaced from the deep.
Like many other music and entertainment venues, the Dolphin Tavern at 1539 S. Broad St. was forced to hold its breath as COVID-19 wreaked havoc on small businesses.
Not only did it survive, but after more than a year of inactivity, the popular nightlife establishment has unveiled several new amenities upon reopening.
Open Wednesday through Saturday, a new sound system and kitchen are just a few of the additions that have people swarming back to the historic venue.
“We are thrilled to announce the reopening of one of South Philly’s most beloved dance clubs,” said FCM’s special events director, Neina Langford. “During the shutdown, Dolphin Tavern’s team was working behind the scenes to add to the experience with a new food menu and kitchen, new stage, more programming and other surprises.”
Music, dancing and dollar tacos are just part of the lure from the reinvented disco-vibe venue, which boasts painted murals, quirky wall art and frequent live music entertainment under a giant disco ball.
In its previous life, the Dolphin was a legendary go-go bar that was often a first stop for sailors who docked at the nearby Navy Yard. It reopened in 2013 and now offers dance music and events every Thursday through Saturday, food service during the day and happy hour specials to bridge the gap between.
Happy hour got even more pleasant, as the bar offers snacks from its newly installed kitchen. Go-to appetizers like chips and salsa, nachos, quesadillas and burritos are available for purchase. You might not find a better deal than the dollar taco menu, which has been quite the crowd pleaser.
“As a welcome back, we are offering a $1 taco menu for the remainder of the summer,” Langford said. “Nothing says summer, celebration and feel-good vibes quite like dollar tacos to add to the party.”
Live music acts have been added to its already popular DJ entertainment, quizzo, karaoke and theme night schedule. The new sound system was purchased from the recently closed Boot & Saddle, which was famous for rocking out with live music at Broad and Ellsworth until it permanently shut its doors due to the pandemic in November.
