Off duty cop dies in motorcycle crash on Broad Street

An off-duty police officer was killed in an auto vehicle crash in South Philly.

According to police, 27-year-old Thomas Munz Jr. suffered fatal injuries when his Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle was involved in an accident with a Chevrolet Equinox on the 3300 block of Broad Street in the Packer Park section of South Philly on May 24 at approximately 6:40 p.m.

Police said an investigation revealed that Munz was traveling southbound on Broad Street when he came in contact with the rear driver’s side of the Chevy Equinox. Munz was ejected from his motorcycle and landed on the road, police said. He was pronounced dead at 6:55 p.m. by first responders from Medic 43.

The driver of the other vehicle did not sustain any injuries and remained on scene, according to police, and an investigation by the Accident Investigation District is ongoing.

Munz worked in the Philadelphia Police Department’s 18th District, which is located in the Cobbs Creek section of West Philadelphia. He had served four years as a police officer in the city.

“I join the city in mourning the loss of Officer Thomas Munz, Jr., who was tragically killed in a vehicle crash last night,” District Attorney Larry Krasner said in a statement. “The District Attorney’s Office extends our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and colleagues in the Department. The events leading up to the crash are currently being investigated, and we stand ready to support the PPD and other involved agencies as needed.

“The facts known at this time are that traffic violence here in Philly and across the nation have reached historic and alarming numbers over the past several years. Public agencies at all levels of government must simply do much more, and faster, to improve road safety for everyone and reduce these often preventable tragedies.”

Munz was one of two officers that was involved in the 2020 police-involved shooting of Walter Wallace in Cobbs Creek which spawned protests in the city. An investigation into Wallace’s death is still ongoing.

“My office’s investigation of the 2020 shooting death by police of Walter Wallace, Jr., a 27-year-old father of nine, is nearing the end of its course,” Krasner said. “We will have no further comment until such time as a resolution can be announced.”
