Discussion on Historic Preservation – At 7 p.m. at Gloria Dei Church, 916 S. Swanson St., Paul Steinke, executive director of the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia, makes a case for historic preservation.

Admission is $10, which includes a drink ticket for a beverage of your choice (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). This program is hosted by the Historic Gloria Dei Preservation Corporation with all funds raised from this event going toward the preservation of Gloria Dei (Old Swedes’) Church and its graveyard.

Mercy Hospice Recovery Walk – Mercy Hospice will host its 4th annual recovery walk in support of those in recovery from substance abuse addictions and in remembrance of those loved and lost to addiction.

Following a prayer service, the walk will proceed through Philadelphia’s Washington Square West neighborhood and conclude at Women of Hope on Lombard Street with a light dinner. All are invited to attend.

September 9

SEPTA Job Fair – From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at SEPTA headquarters at 1234 Market St. Available jobs include entry level, skilled trade and corporate positions. The event will provide job seekers the opportunity to meet with managers from various departments, and recruiters will also be on hand to review resumes and discuss potential career paths at SEPTA. Opera in the Park – From 6:30 to 9 p.m. in FDR Park, a free performance and film in the park. Includes a live performances by baritone Kevin Godínez, soprano Ethel Trujillo and pianist Ting Ting Wong as well as an outdoor movie screening of Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel (Spanish and English subtitles). Home Opener Concert with Two Friends – From 3-8 p.m. at Xfinity Live! Attendees will enjoy a performance by LA-based DJ duo Matt Halper and Eli Sones. Tickets include access to the event area, outdoor bars and restrooms and food trucks. Followed by the concert, guests are welcome to attend Amazon Prime’s Thursday Night Football Pre-Game Show taking place in the valet lot. The Birds game will also be shown on an LED screen in the concert area. Tickets start at $20 and can be purchased at axs.com. The event is 21+. Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show – The show returns to the Square in center-city, marking its 96th year bringing fine art to all at this free event. One-hundred forty-five professional artists from around the country and Canada will exhibit their originals-only fine art work around the perimeter of the park. This year, the RSFAS will feature the Fleisher Art Memorial in the center of the park to celebrate its 125th anniversary. South Street Oktoberfest – The 15th Annual event kicks off Oktoberfest season with an all-day, all-ages block party on the 700 block of South St. with German beers and food, shaded seating in a giant tent for over 1,000 people, live music, dancers, dancing, liter lift competition, face painting, family fun and more. The event is free for general admission. St. Paul’s welcomes back the members of St. Mary Magdalen dePazzi Parish and School after the 10 a.m. Mass at St. Mary’s church; in the basement hall from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. Free refreshments. Mannequin – At 8 p.m. on Zoom, a musical dramedy by actor Jennfer Blaine about Olive, an elderly Jewish shopkeeper of a defunct fur store, and Patti, a young teen new to Philadelphia. Together they escape into memories of other eras, their imaginations and magical realism to find terrain where they forge a bond and find their true selves. Blaine plays 14 human and mannequin characters in this Zoom performance that asks the audience whether being witness to history is enough, or do they need to act to face the challenges of the  time. The Words that Made Us – At 6:30 p.m. at the Museum of the American Revolution, constitutional scholar and Yale University professor Akhil Reed Amar joins the Museum as the distinguished lecturer for the fifth Carl M. Buchholz Memorial Lecture. His talk will focus on his most recent book The Words That Made Us: America’s Constitutional Conversation, 1760-1840, which provides a history of the American Constitution’s formative decades. The hybrid event will take place in the Museum’s Liberty Hall and will be livestreamed for ticketed online viewers. Onsite tickets begin at $35 and include a signed copy of the book. Twilight in the Gardens – from 7-10 p.m. at Magic Gardens, 1020 South St. A live musical performance by Daniel de Jesus and guided art workshop by Brijette Zachary. Every month features a different genre of music and new teaching artist who helps guests create a work of art to take home.

Jennifer Blaine and Friends – At 8 p.m. at Mister John’s Music, 761 S. 8th St. A brand new solo live show with stand up and many silly characters such as Bill the Body Piercer, Lewis Black, Ruth and Dixie, exploration of existential crises and how people are navigating technology, while still retaining humanity and the ability to be a friend. Garden Party Happy Hour – From 5-8 p.m. at Magic Gardens, 1020 South St., enjoy a happy hour and crafting event in the colorful mosaicked wonderland. All drinks are included with admission, so guests can enjoy a cold beer, wine from Chaddsford Winery and beverages by Hochstadter’s Slow & Low Whiskey. Popcorn and pretzels along with treats from Ramona Susan’s Bakeshop will also be offered. After attendees are done making art they can try out the “tile bingo” game and listen to a DJ from BridgeSet Sound on hand to spin vinyl tunes.

Sinatra Social Society of Philadelphia Fall Luncheon – From 1-4 p.m. at Maggiano’s Little Italy in the Cherry Hill Mall. The luncheon will consist of three courses including coffee, tea and soft drinks with a cash bar. Sinatra music presented by Lou Dottoli. Everyone will receive a 4″x 6″ framed picture of Francis Albert along with Sinatra items to be sold and raffled. Tickets are $64.
