Let the games begin
How refreshing to read the op-ed by Maura McCarthy and Dontae Privette on the FDR Park Plan to add a dozen multi-purpose playing fields (“Build more sports fields for kids,” Jan. 10). McCarthy, CEO of Fairmount Park Conservancy, and Privette, director of community engagement for Philadelphia Youth Sports Collaborative, have the perfect credentials to express their opinions on this topic.
What pleases me most is that the plan they describe takes into consideration the impact of such a project on the environment. I am happy to read that the materials being used for these fields are made of all-natural ingredients like walnut shells, sand and coconut fibers. No AstroTurf anywhere in the construction project.
Of course the impact of this project on the lives of youngsters from pre-school to adolescence should be positive in so many ways. The best part of this plan is that these carefully constructed playing fields provide a safe, healthy space for sports recreation.
Of course I approve of the fact that these fields will be located in a natural environment that is beneficial for both mind and body mainly because it is cleaner, greener and safer.
Let’s admit it. Kids need a safe place to play and socialize. Putting their playgrounds in clean, natural spaces is also good for them mentally and physically. If it also protects them and their neighbors from negative climate change, all the better. Yes, indeed, game on!
