After his stolen credit cards were denied, a South of South man allegedly attempted to rob an area deli.

Daniel Bombaro, 39, of the 900 block of South 21st Street, strolled in Kim Van Grocery & Deli, 2148 Christian St., and asked the 49-year-old behind the counter for a pack of Marlboro Ultra Lights at 7:35 p.m. May 11, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said.

He used a credit card, but it was denied, so he left and returned with another credit card, which also was denied. Both cards were later found to be stolen, Tolliver said. However, even before the cashier informed him of the rejection, Bombaro allegedly went behind the counter and pointed a pair of scissors at him and yelled, “just give me the money.” After a brief struggle among the Bambaro, the employee and a customer, who stepped in to help, Bombaro is believed to have dropped the cutting device and fled the store and took off east on Christian.

At 22nd and Christian streets, the cashier and customer saw officers, who pursued and arrested him near 21st Street, Tolliver said.

The employee suffered two small cuts on his right hand, Tolliver said.

Bombaro was charged with robbery, theft, receiving stolen property, aggravated assault, simple assault, possession of an instrument of crime, recklessly endangering another person and access device fraud.
