Unfruitful request

A potential robber fled a South of South business with nothing after neither he nor the employee could open the register.

A man entered May’s Gourmet Café and Deli, 1847 Christian St., and asked the 50-year-old employee for a banana at 8:20 p.m. Dec. 21, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. As she turned to get it, the patron grabbed her, covering her mouth and pushing her to the till. He commanded she open it, but when she replied she could not, he punched her in the left eye and tried to open it himself with a screwdriver, but did not have any luck. The man instead grabbed the tip jar containing $3 from the counter and ran out of the store and north on 19th Street.

He was described as black, age 30, 5-foot-11, 225 pounds and wearing a gray or blue fleece zipper jacket, blue work jeans, green gloves and a tan baseball cap.
