As the seconds ticked down to midnight, Philadelphians rang in the New Year the only way they know how: with 10,000 pounds of explosives illuminating the dark sky. Thousands filed towards Penn’s Landing in the evening hours of Dec. 31, 2007, to huddle close, necks craned upward, in anticipation of the light show that signifies the beginning of ’08. With yells of "Happy New Year!" echoing across the city, the promise and hope of a fresh start filled the night air. SPR
