Halfball tourney honors Marzano

Six teams braved the rain on May 20 in the 12th Annual John Marzano Halfball Tournament in the hopes of claiming the ultimate bragging rights of a South Philly pastime.

As part of the South 9th Street Italian Market Festival, the tournament was presented by Major League Cornhole at the Christopher Columbus Charter School near 9th and Christian streets.

The tournament was won by PR Express, which took home a Chickie’s & Pete’s gift certificate and will be added to an engraved plaque as the 2023 winners. Nitty’s Tavern took second.

The tournament honors the late Marzano who grew up near 11th and Wharton streets before playing Major League Baseball for the Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers, and later becoming a baseball analyst for the Philadelphia Phillies and mlb.com.
