Rising Voices 2 Opening Reception – from 5-8 p.m. at Studio Incamminati on the 7th floor of the Bok Building, 1901 S. 9th St., over 40 realist paintings by some of the nation’s most promising women artists.

The exhibition features the finalists for the 2021 Bennett Prize, a major national competition for women realist painters, and a solo exhibition of the work of Aneka Ingold, winner of the 2019 Bennett Prize.

One of the nation’s top ateliers for contemporary realist painting, the faculty of Studio Incamminati teach the skills that unlock figurative realist art’s capacity to tell stories and to address the human condition in all its complexity.

This free exhibition presents a special opportunity for the young women of Philadelphia to take inspiration from a cast of talented female role models. The exhibition will be on view at Studio Incamminati through May 14.

May 5

Spirits and History – from 7-9 p.m. at Riverside Hall on the church grounds, Columbus Boulevard and Christian Street. Calling all area history buffs who also love spirits, wine and craft beer. You’ll find all this, plus graveyard tours with stories about European settlers who came to America before William Penn, live jazz played by The Jazz Sanctuary, spirits from local distilleries, craft brews, hors d’oeuvres from local chefs and an auction where everyone wins. May 6

South Street Fest – From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., the South Street Headhouse District will be hosting its annual South Street Fest. The theme is Crowns All Around, as Brauhaus Schmitz’s Maifest, the Kentucky Derby and King Charles III’s coronation all take place on the same day as this year’s festival. From flower crowns to fascinators.

May 6

LOMO Spring Flea Market – From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in front of South Philadelphia High School, on Broad Street. Past flea markets have featured over 60 vendors and 1,500-plus shoppers. Event proceeds benefit the LoMo Civic Association. Neighborhood residents, professional vendors, crafters and artists are all welcome to apply for tables. $25 per space. Teen Jewelry Workshop – At 4:30 p.m. at Whitman Library, During this class, you will learn some of the basic techniques and skills of working with different jewelry-making tools and materials, and then put those techniques to use in a practical project. Registration required. Call 215-685-1754.

Garden Party Happy Hour – From 5-8 p.m. at Magic Gardens, 1020 South St., enjoy a happy hour and crafting event in the colorful mosaicked wonderland. All drinks are included with admission, so guests can enjoy a cold beer, delicious wine from Chaddsford Winery and tasty beverages by Hochstadter’s Slow & Low Whiskey. Popcorn and pretzels along with treats from Ramona Susan’s Bakeshop will also be offered. After attendees are done making art they can try out the “tile bingo” game, and listen to a DJ from BridgeSet Sound on hand to spin vinyl tunes.

Mother’s Day Card Craft – At 4:30 at Whitman Library, this hands-on workshop, led by Dawn Rulli, participants will design and make their own Mother’s Day cards. Participants will receive 5 blank cards and envelopes. No experience is necessary and supplies will be provided. This program is for adults and teens.

Porter, Berlin and Gershwin – at 7 p.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church, 923 Christian St., part of the Mario Lanza Concert Series to kick off the Italian Market Festival week. Jeremy Winston Chorale – at 6:30 p.m. at the Museum of the American Revolution, a live musical experience presented by The Jeremy Winston Chorale and inspired by the Museum’s special exhibition, Black Founders: The Forten Family of Philadelphia. Featuring more than 20 Chorale members and led by composer and artistic director Jeremy Winston, the concert will celebrate the life of free Black Philadelphian James Forten and explore Philadelphia’s rich musical history through storytelling and song. Onsite tickets include day-of pre-event access to Black Founders from 11 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. and access to a cash bar prior to the event. The concert also will be live streamed via Zoom, without intermission, from 6:30 – 8 p.m. Onsite tickets include Zoom access and are $30 for general admission or $25 for Museum Members. 3ICE North American Tour – At 1 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Center, three-on-three professional North American ice hockey league makes a stop in South Philly. Each stop on the tour features four of the eight league teams, comprised of professional ice hockey players competing in three-on-three format for two eight-minute periods with a running clock.
