Typewriter shop a delight
Had a wonderful experience last week visiting our local typewriter shop at 1735 E. Passyunk Ave., Philly Typewriter, owned by Bryan Kravtiz and Bill Rhoda. A sign outside their door invited anyone to come inside and type on the old typewriter donated to their shop by famous actor Tom Hanks from his own enormous collection.
Of course I went inside and played with the keys while the owners took my picture. I told them I was happy to see their shop reported in our daily newspapers because of this story. They told me that another reporter had just visited them and was planning an article for the South Philly Review.
Well to my delight, I found and read the comprehensive report by Mark Zimmaro giving the whole history of the shop and their connection to Tom Hanks (“The largest typewriter company in the world is on E. Passyunk,” May 3). What a special gift to our community to have a place just to hang out or take a typewriter for repairs or to buy one. Plus they have a historic collection of old typewriters similar to those I used as a teenager learning to type at my alma mater, Saint Maria Goretti High.
We are so lucky to have this incredible shop to visit for fun or business or both.
