A man swiped more than $1,000 from a collection basket during a Sunday afternoon mass at a Bella Vista church.

Churchgoers at St. Paul’s Parish, 913 Christian St., added money to the collection basket and passed it along at 1:25 p.m., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The basket was then placed under the last pew where an unknown man was sitting alone. As parishioners partook in communion, the man placed something under his sweatshirt and left the church in an unknown direction.

The collection basket was missing about $1,300, Tolliver said.

The thief was described as black with a light complexion, age 30 to 35, 5-foot-5; having a slim build and beard; and wearing a navy blue shirt with white stripes, black pants and carrying a black backpack.
